PROVIDENCE, RI – Governor Dan McKee today announced that Chairperson Kim Ahern will conclude her tenure with the Rhode Island Cannabis Control Commission.
Chairperson Ahern was appointed by Governor McKee and has served as the inaugural chair of the Commission in 2023, playing a critical role in establishing Rhode Island’s legal cannabis regulatory framework.
Under her leadership, the Commission developed Rhode Island’s first set of adult-use cannabis regulations, launched the state’s Social Equity Applicant Certification process, and opened the inaugural Adult-Use Cannabis Retail License Application period for all license types, including social equity applicants and worker cooperatives.
“I want to thank Kim for her leadership during a crucial time in Rhode Island’s implementation of adult-use cannabis,” said Governor McKee. “She helped stand up the Commission from the ground up and ensured that Rhode Island’s cannabis industry was launched with public health, safety, and fairness as priorities. I’ve had the privilege of working closely with Kim since her time in my office, and I’ve seen firsthand her professionalism and commitment to public service. We wish her the very best.”
“Chairperson Ahern’s leadership has been defined by collaboration and a steadfast commitment to equity and excellence,” said Administrator Michelle Reddish, who leads the Cannabis Office. “Her work has positioned the Commission and the Office for continued progress and success.”
Chairperson Ahern reflected on the privilege of serving Rhode Island and on the achievements made possible through teamwork and shared purpose. “Serving the State in this capacity has been a privilege,” said Chairperson Ahern. “I’m proud of what we’ve achieved together in such a short time, and I look forward to continuing to serve Rhode Island in new ways in the future.”
Chairperson Ahern’s last day will be today, October 21. The State will begin the process of identifying her successor. In the meantime, the Commission will continue its work under the leadership of Commissioners Layi Oduyingbo and Robert Jacquard, in partnership with Administrator Reddish and the Cannabis Office.
