Governor McKee, Department of Housing Announce Additional Funding Available through Municipal Homelessness Support Initiative

PROVIDENCE, RI – Today, Governor Dan McKee and Secretary Deborah Goddard announced that additional funding through the Municipal Homelessness Support Initiative is available to support emergency hubs for this winter.

The Municipal Homelessness Support Initiative, funded through State Fiscal Recovery Funds, has previously funded two rounds of awards to support emergency winter hubs, extra winter shelter capacity, and formula grants.  For this winter, the Department released the application in September 2024 and funded all applications received, which included awards to West Warwick, Woonsocket, Westerly, Burrillville, and Newport. After issuing those grant awards earlier this month, the Department identified that there was approximately $65,000 remaining. To ensure that all funds are available to the community as quickly as possible, the Department will make new awards on a rolling basis until funds are exhausted. With this grant, the Department of Housing anticipates making one to two additional awards to new or expanding emergency hubs.

“We have seen incredible grassroots efforts to support people experiencing homelessness and want to provide resources to support this important work. As I said in the State of the State, it requires everyone pulling up a chair. I am grateful to Secretary Goddard for identifying additional funding that we can make immediately available to cities and towns to stand up additional or expanded emergency hubs that can be available on a drop-in basis on the coldest nights,” said Governor Dan McKee.

“The Department of Housing is glad to be able to make this funding available to cities and towns to ensure Rhode Islanders have a safe place to be on cold nights,” said Secretary Deborah Goddard. “We will prioritize review of these applications within our office so that funding can go out as soon as possible.”

“Winter hubs are a lifeline for our most vulnerable neighbors during the coldest months,” said West Warwick Fire Department Chief Varone. “The additional funding from the Municipal Homelessness Support Initiative allows us, and our community partners, to ensure that more people in West Warwick have access to a safe, warm place when they need it most. These hubs are an important resource in our ongoing efforts to address homelessness, and we are grateful for the support that will help us expand our capacity to meet the growing need.
